Who we are

Hello! My name is Elena Potter and Violet Hour Flowers is my micro-flower-farm and floral design practice. I am a farmer-florist, land worker, community weaver, and artist.

The work I do through Violet Hour Flowers honours seasonality and place through creating everyday bouquets and celebration florals, using flowers grown with ecological integrity and reverence for the land, on a tiny plot of about 600 square feet. Everything I sell, I grow myself, and my flower crops are grown using organic and low-till methods.

Outside of this project, I work at Mount Wolfe Farm growing vegetables, and I see these two threads of farm work as being intimately related. I value farming as a pursuit of joyfully reconnecting people with earth’s beauty and nourishment. Working with land, with vegetables and flowers, helps create a pathway between the land itself and the people who eat and enjoy the crops.

On a practical level, my skill as a grower was, and continues to be, honed through my 6 years (and counting) of small-scale organic vegetable farming.

I love to serve as a “community flower witch” for life milestones of all kinds. My work uses flowers to offer the vital medicine of beauty, and invite you into deeper reverent and delightful relationship with the living world.

I am a queer, Jewish, farmer femme of Celtic Isles and German heritage, living in the Humber River watershed and at the shores of Lake Ontario.
